“Don’t Be Ridiculous, You’ll Love It”: What’s Really Behind the Pressure to Have Kids.
Oct 14, 2026
You finally say it out loud: you’re still deciding whether you want to be a parent.
And instead of curiosity, you get pushback.
“Don’t be ridiculous. You’ll love it.”
“Just do it.”
“What else are you going to do with your life?”
“I’ll never understand people who don’t have kids.”
Sometimes it’s said lightly. Sometimes it comes with real heat. Either way, you walk away feeling like you did something wrong just by admitting you haven’t decided yet.
Here’s what I want you to understand: you didn’t. And very often, that pushback isn’t about you at all.
Watch as I share more:
Why the pushback often isn’t about you
When someone reacts strongly to you taking time with this decision, what’s often being triggered is their own ambivalence. Usually they don’t even know it’s there.
I call this unexplored certainty.
Many people never had the chance to explore whether they wanted children. It wasn’t presented as a choice. You grew up, you had kids, and that’s what people did. There was nothing to decide.
So when you say you’re taking time to figure out what you really want, it can land as a challenge. The subtext is something like: Who are you to take time to think about this? I didn’t. There was no choice for me. How dare you?
They won’t say it that way. They may not even be aware of it. But the energy comes through, and it comes at you as an effort to make you wrong.
What might be underneath
Maybe they didn’t want children and never let themselves look at that. Maybe it never occurred to them that it was an option to really think about. Or maybe they wanted to be parents but didn’t realize they had choices about the conditions: the timing, the partner, the circumstances.
None of this means they regret their lives or their children. It means they never got the opportunity you’re giving yourself now.
What this means for you
When the pushback comes, remember that you’ve become the target of someone else’s unexplored issues. Their reaction says more about their story than about your choices. Their discomfort is real, but it isn’t yours to carry.
You don’t owe anyone a defense of your process.
Taking time to decide isn’t indulgent or ridiculous. It’s how you arrive at a choice you can stand behind, whether that’s parenthood or choosing to live childfree.
That exploration is exactly what my Parenthood Clarity™ process is designed to support.
If you’re ready to stop second-guessing yourself and make a decision once and for all, I’d love to guide you there.
